The Basic Job
Instead of a manual clutch, an automatic uses fluid movement inside the converter to transfer power. The engine can keep running at a stop, then the converter moves power into the transmission as you accelerate.
Inside The Converter
The main parts are the pump, turbine, stator, and converter clutch. The pump is driven by the engine. The turbine sends power toward the transmission. The stator redirects fluid to improve torque multiplication. The clutch locks the converter during cruise.
Why Converters Fail
- Converter clutch lining wears and causes shudder.
- Overheating damages fluid and seals.
- Internal bearings or stator parts wear.
- Debris from a failing transmission contaminates the converter.
- Pressure or valve-body problems make lockup apply incorrectly.
Symptoms
Converter problems can feel like shudder at highway speed, RPM flare, poor fuel economy, overheating, stalling, or metal/debris in the fluid. They often appear during steady Arlington Heights commuting rather than in a parking lot.
Repair Decision
A converter may be replaced by itself only when the rest of the transmission checks out. If converter debris has moved through the unit, the repair needs to address the transmission, cooler, and valve body too.
