P0796 means pressure control solenoid C is not responding the way the transmission computer expects, often described as performance or stuck off. The result can be low pressure in the circuit that solenoid is supposed to control.
What Pressure Control Solenoid C Does
Pressure-control solenoids modulate hydraulic pressure instead of simply turning a shift on or off. When one sticks or responds slowly, the transmission may slip, shift harshly, or protect itself with limp mode.
Common Causes
- Solenoid C sticking from varnish or debris.
- Electrical fault in the solenoid circuit.
- Valve-body wear affecting regulated pressure.
- Low or contaminated fluid.
- Internal wear creating pressure demand the solenoid cannot meet.
Symptoms
P0796 may feel like delayed engagement, flare during a shift, harsh shift correction, limp mode, or a warning light after heat builds. It can be more noticeable under load, on ramps, or during highway merging.
Diagnosis
We compare commanded pressure, solenoid response, fluid condition, and shift behavior. If the solenoid fails electrical testing and the pan is clean, a targeted repair may work. If debris is present, the solenoid may be only the messenger.
