P0716 is an input or turbine speed sensor range/performance code. The sensor may still be sending a signal, but the computer does not believe the signal matches how the vehicle is actually moving.
How P0716 Differs From P0715
P0715 often points to a missing or failed circuit. P0716 is more about an unreasonable signal. The sensor may drop out, spike, lag, or report a speed that does not match engine RPM, output speed, and commanded gear.
Symptoms
Drivers may feel erratic shifts, delayed shifts, harsh engagement, limp mode, or a warning light that appears after the vehicle warms up. Because the signal can be intermittent, a short scan in the parking lot may miss it.
Likely Causes
- Weak input speed sensor signal.
- Metal debris on the sensor tip.
- Connector corrosion or harness damage.
- Internal tone-wheel or clutch slip confusing the speed calculation.
- Fluid or pressure problems creating real slip that looks like a sensor issue.
Diagnosis
We road-test with live data and compare input speed, output speed, gear command, and engine RPM. If the input signal jumps or drops while the rest of the data is steady, we look at the sensor and wiring. If the signal is believable but the ratio is wrong, the problem may be actual transmission slip.
Why It Matters
The computer uses input speed to make shift decisions. Bad data can make the transmission act worse than the failed part itself. Getting the signal tested early can prevent unnecessary internal repair.
