P0742 means the torque converter clutch is acting like it stayed applied when it should have released. That can make the vehicle feel like a manual-transmission car coming to a stop without pushing the clutch pedal: rough, dragging, or even stalling.
What The Torque Converter Clutch Does
The converter clutch locks the engine and transmission together at cruising speed to reduce heat and improve efficiency. It should release when you slow down, stop, accelerate, or when the computer decides lockup is not appropriate.
When the clutch stays applied, the engine can fight the drivetrain at low speed. That is why P0742 can cause stalling at stoplights, harsh downshifts, shudder, or a heavy dragging feel when you are slowing for traffic in Arlington Heights or Rolling Meadows.
Common Causes
- A stuck torque converter clutch solenoid.
- Valve-body wear or debris holding the lockup circuit applied.
- Contaminated fluid causing valves to hang up.
