P0705 means the computer is not getting a believable gear-position signal. The range sensor, linkage, wiring, or shifter input is telling the vehicle one thing while the transmission or computer sees another.
Why The Range Signal Matters
The vehicle needs to know whether it is in Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, or a lower range. That signal affects starting, reverse lights, shift scheduling, backup-camera behavior, and limp-mode logic. When it is wrong, the vehicle can act confused even if the transmission itself is not worn out.
Symptoms That Point To P0705
- The vehicle will not start in Park but starts in Neutral.
- The dash gear indicator does not match the shifter position.
- Reverse lights do not work or stay on at the wrong time.
- The transmission shifts harshly because the computer does not trust gear input.
- The vehicle sets P0705 after shifter, cable, or battery work.
