P0741 means the torque converter clutch is not holding when the computer expects it to hold. The vehicle may still drive, but the converter is slipping when it should be locked, which builds heat and wastes fuel.
What Drivers Notice
Many P0741 complaints are subtle at first. You may see higher highway RPM, worse fuel economy, a light shudder around cruise speed, or a check-engine light after a longer drive. Some vehicles do not feel obviously broken until the converter or fluid gets worse.
What Causes P0741?
- Low or overheated fluid reducing converter-clutch apply pressure.
- A worn converter clutch lining.
- A failing TCC solenoid or pressure-control issue.
- Valve-body wear in the lockup circuit.
- Wiring, connector, or control problems.
Diagnosis
We monitor converter slip speed while the computer commands lockup. If the command is present and slip stays high, the clutch is not holding. Then we check fluid, pan evidence, solenoid response, wiring, and whether the converter has contaminated the system.
Can You Keep Driving?
Short-term gentle driving may be possible if the vehicle shifts normally and is not overheating. Long highway commutes from Arlington Heights to Chicago or repeated I-90 trips can make the heat problem worse. If shudder is heavy or the fluid smells burnt, do not keep pushing it.
Repair Path
P0741 can be a solenoid, valve-body, converter, or internal repair. The cost difference is large, so the diagnosis needs to prove the failure before parts are ordered.
