P0732 - Gear 2 Incorrect Ratio | Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis & Repair Costs

P0732 means second gear did not hold the ratio the computer expected. That may sound narrow, but second gear is used constantly in city driving, suburban turns, and low-speed acceleration. A small slip there can become a bigger repair if it is ignored.

How Second-Gear Problems Show Up

Drivers often describe a flare after the first shift, a bump into second, a delayed upshift, or a vehicle that feels normal cold but sloppy after it warms up. Some vehicles set P0732 by itself. Others add solenoid, pressure, or general transmission-control codes.

What Can Cause P0732©

The cause depends heavily on the transmission design. It may be a worn band, a second clutch issue, a valve-body leak, a bad solenoid command, low fluid pressure, or contamination from a failing converter. That is why the same P0732 code can lead to very different repair recommendations on a Honda, Ford, GM, Toyota, or Dodge.

Inspection Priorities

  • Confirm the code and check for related pressure or solenoid codes.
  • Inspect fluid level, smell, and color before clearing anything.
  • Road-test the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts under light and moderate throttle.
  • Check whether the problem changes hot versus cold.
  • Use pan evidence to decide whether internal wear is already present.

Local Driving Context

Short trips around Arlington Heights, Palatine, and Mount Prospect can hide a second-gear slip until the unit is hot. A longer Route 53 or I-90 drive may bring it out. If the symptom changes with temperature, say so when you call.

Repair Decision

A clean-fluid vehicle with a repeatable electronic or valve-body fault may not need a full rebuild. Burnt fluid, heavy debris, or a second gear that will not hold under load points toward internal repair. The written estimate should make that distinction clearly.
