P0715 is an input or turbine speed sensor circuit code. The computer needs that signal to know how fast the transmission input side is turning. If the signal is wrong, shift timing and converter control can fall apart quickly.
Input Speed Versus Output Speed
The input speed sensor watches the transmission side connected to engine power. The output speed sensor watches vehicle-side speed. The computer compares both to calculate gear ratio, clutch slip, and shift timing.
Symptoms
- Harsh or delayed shifts.
- Limp mode after the vehicle starts moving.
- Erratic tachometer or shift behavior on some vehicles.
- Gear-ratio codes stored with the speed-sensor code.
- Problems that appear after heat, vibration, or road spray.
What Causes P0715?
The sensor can fail, but wiring and connector problems are common. Metal debris on the sensor tip, harness damage, internal tone-wheel problems, and fluid contamination can also affect the reading.
How We Diagnose It
We inspect live input-speed data, compare it to engine RPM and output speed, check wiring continuity, inspect the connector, and look for related ratio or solenoid codes. If the signal is clean at the sensor but missing at the module, the harness becomes the focus.
Drive-Or-Tow Decision
If the vehicle is stuck in limp mode or shifting hard, call before driving. If the warning just appeared and the vehicle still shifts normally, schedule a diagnostic soon before bad speed data creates heat and clutch wear.
