2017 - 2021 Hybrid: 6-speed dual-clutch automated manual (DCT) paired with 32 kW electric motor; no traditional torque converter 2017 - 2021 Electric: Single-speed fixed-ratio reduction gear; no multi-speed transmission 2017 - 2021 Plug-In Hybrid: Same 6-speed DCT as standard hybrid with larger battery pack Note: Ioniq 5/6 (2022+) use entirely different EV platform - not covered here
The Ioniq's DCT requires specialized hybrid-aware diagnostic procedures. Scan tool must read both the hybrid control module and transmission control module simultaneously. Low-speed shudder is often resolved with a Hyundai-issued TCM software update - confirm current calibration version first. If shudder persists after update, clutch pack inspection is required. DCT fluid condition and level are checked via dipstick-less fill procedure. Physical clutch wear requires DCT disassembly. Electric model drivetrain service is minimal - primarily seal and bearing inspection.
Hyundai DCT fluid (Genuine SP-DCT or equivalent); approximately 3.5 - 4.5 quarts; incorrect fluid causes severe clutch shudder - do not substitute standard ATF
Software update: same day; fluid service: same day; clutch pack inspection: 1 - 2 days; full DCT rebuild: 3 - 5 days
Every vehicle needs diagnosis before anyone can promise a repair path. These are the situations we help organize before you decide what to do next.
Tell us when it happens, whether reverse still works, and if warning lights are on. A scan and fluid check come before guessing at a rebuild.
Fluid condition, leak location, and driving distance matter. If the vehicle is slipping badly or overheating, towing may be the safer next step.
A failed solenoid, valve body, converter, or internal clutch problem can lead to very different repair paths. The goal is a clear diagnosis and written estimate.
Low-speed shudder is a well-known characteristic of the Ioniq DCT. Hyundai issued several software calibration updates that significantly reduce this behavior. If your TCM software is current and shudder persists, clutch pack wear is the likely cause.
No traditional multi-speed transmission. The Ioniq Electric uses a single fixed-ratio reduction gear - there are no shift points, clutches, or fluid to maintain (beyond normal drivetrain seals and bearings). It is far simpler mechanically than the hybrid version.
Yes - the powertrain warranty covers DCT defects through 5 years/60,000 miles on standard coverage, or 10 years/100,000 miles if you purchased Hyundai's extended powertrain warranty. Software updates are typically free within warranty.
Hyundai recommends inspection every 60,000 miles and fluid replacement if contamination is found. For Arlington Heights suburban driving, we recommend fluid check every 30,000 miles given the frequent stop-and-go that stresses the clutch pack more than highway use.
We can rebuild DCT units when clutch wear is the primary issue. If the DCT housing or shift forks are damaged, a remanufactured unit is more cost-effective. Software issues are resolved with reprogramming, not hardware replacement.
Same-day appointments available. Honest estimates, no surprises. We've been doing this for Arlington Heights drivers.
