C5 A6 (1997 - 2004): ZF 5HP19/5HP24 on V6/V8 Quattro. C6 A6 (2005 - 2011): ZF 6HP19/6HP26 on 3.2L V6 and 4.2L V8 Quattro. C7 A6 (2012 - 2018): 8-speed ZF 8HP on 2.0T, 3.0T supercharged V6. C8 A6 (2019+): 7-speed S-Tronic or 8-speed ZF on 2.0T/3.0T; MHEV on 55 TFSI.
A6 transmission work covers three ZF generations. C6 mechatronic repair is the most common - same tooling and procedures as BMW's ZF 6HP application. C7/C8 ZF 8HP solenoid repair follows standard ZF 8HP procedures. All require VCDS programming after mechatronic or valve body replacement.
ZF 6HP: ZF LGF6. ZF 8HP: ZF LGF8. Change every 40,000 miles.
Verify exact spec on the dipstick label or owner's manual before fill. Recommended change interval: every 60,000 miles for normal driving, 30,000 miles under severe service (towing, stop-and-go, hot climates). Pan service typically takes 6 - 8 quarts; a full fluid exchange takes 10 - 14 quarts depending on cooler-line capacity.
Mechatronic: 1 - 2 days. ZF rebuild: 3 - 4 days.
Fluid service and inspection complete the same day. Solenoid or sensor replacement: 1 day. Torque converter or seal repair: 2 - 3 days. Full rebuild with road test: 4 - 6 days. Time estimates assume parts in stock - call (312) 452-5637 to verify availability for your specific vehicle.
Every vehicle needs diagnosis before anyone can promise a repair path. These are the situations we help organize before you decide what to do next.
Tell us when it happens, whether reverse still works, and if warning lights are on. A scan and fluid check come before guessing at a rebuild.
Fluid condition, leak location, and driving distance matter. If the vehicle is slipping badly or overheating, towing may be the safer next step.
A failed solenoid, valve body, converter, or internal clutch problem can lead to very different repair paths. The goal is a clear diagnosis and written estimate.
On a C6 A6 with ZF 6HP, yes - limp mode (3rd gear lock) is the mechatronic failure signature. $1,600 - 2,400 to replace.
Our price for the same ZF 8HP rebuild: $2,800 - 3,800. We'd encourage a second opinion.
1 - 2 days including VCDS adaptation coding.
ZF 8HP is a capable unit - failures are typically from fluid neglect rather than design weakness. Change LGF8 every 40,000 miles.
Yes - we have VCDS programming capability for all Audi/VW applications.
Same-day appointments available. Honest estimates, no surprises. We've been doing this for Arlington Heights drivers.
